CHRIS STEELE

DRUMMER/PERCUSSIONIST/INSTRUCTOR

Hard-working, freelancing, touring musician, Chris Steele completed his bachelors in percussion performance at Dana School of Music in Youngstown, OH and his Masters degree in Jazz Studies at the Thornton School of Music (USC). He has creatively applied his percussions skills across an original array of drums, cajóns, hubcaps, toys, and anything else that makes noise. All done to meet his vision and quest to express his true self thru rhthym. When he’s not touring with bands and artists across the world, he provides instructions for beginning to advanced students interested in all genres of music including rock/pop, jazz, reggae, etc… Chris also teaches how to play drum set grooves on the cajon using his book “The Cajon Drummer”, a recent release from Alfred Publishing. “Learn the language of rhythm as a means to better express your personal truths”

The Cajon Drummer

The cajon is not only a percussion instrument in its own right, it has also become the new drumset. Playing space and musical setting/dynamics have much to do with this, but practicality has blossomed into a viable means of expression that is not limited to percussionists only. Chris Steele’s book, aimed at drummers as well as non-drummers (i.e., anyone else), provides everything anyone might need to know about playing the cajon: from learning how to get a sound, to getting many sounds and textures, to rhythms that work in any setting or style.

Mistakes, Mishaps (And Other Things of Character)

MIstakes, Mishaps, is as honest a record as ever been made with not even a nod to commercial viability.  Just music from the mind of a life-long rhythmic explorer.

Chris composed a series of grooves first, and with a collaborative effort from co producer Jon Gagan, added the harmonic and melodic layers.  Half the record features a series of percussion/drumset duets between Chris and world- drummer Peter Erskine.  Chris took some of the grooves they created on the fly and turned them into full songs while left others to be stand alone pieces of music.  The result made for a completely original record that is surely like nothing you’ve heard before.
